Since 20-th of ХХ century Boston Terrier enjoyed wide popularity.  Ladies preferred Bostons as a companion dog taking them everywhere. The breed was wildly portrayed at Boston Terrier posters, postcards, magazines and newspapers.

Boston Terrier is an indubitable success of American breeders. It was the first non-sporting dog bred in the United States. That’s why Boston Terrier has the nickname “American Gentleman”. The breed background is English Bulldog and White English Terrier. Bred for fighting, Bostons of today are an ideal companion, playful, highly intelligent and great family pet. Boston Terrier puppies love to give wet kisses and sleep in owner’s bed.

The breed is characterized by small, compactly built body, with a short muzzle, which makes them sneeze, wheeze, snort and snore. But on the other hand Boston Terriers do not bark much.

The black and white coat of Bostons is typical, but if you’re looking for a Boston terrier bear in mind that the dog with a seal or mahogany brindle with symmetrical markings is more popular and highly prized.

Airedale Terrier

Airedale Terrier is often called “King of Terriers” because of its size. The breed originates from England. Airedales are highly intelligent, fearless and energetic. According to many stories, Airedales were wildly used as messengers and Red Cross aids in World War II. Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, and Warren Harding owned Airedales and this fact with breeds  natural bravery and intelligence, promoted these beautiful dogs. John Wayne always took his Airedale Terriers wherever he went. They were nicknamed “Big Duke” and “Little Duke”. Airedales often perform in circuses, they guard and hunt.

Airedales have hard, dense and wiry coat. It has to be cut from time to time as the dogs do not shed.

Bear in mind that the dogs of the breed are very independent and even stubborn, that’s why Airedale puppies need firm, patient and consistent training. But do not bore the dog, as Airedales are “thinkers”.

The vintage art advertising Akita poster is one of artworks by Ken Bailey. He chose the breed for tea advertising deliberately as the breed originates from Japan, which is famous by its tea ceremony. Akita is actually a national treasure proclaimed by Japanese government symbolizing health and wealth. The breed’s name came from one of the regions of the island of Honshū in the Akita prefecture.

Unfortunately, Akitas became almost extinct during World War II, as their fur was widely used for warm army uniforms. Today the breed is presented in two separate types: the Akita Inu and the American Akita. The difference is in coat colours:  American Akita can be of any color, whereas Japanese Akitas are only red, fawn, sesame, white, or brindle.

The dogs are very territorial and protective. The breed is very close to the wolf. Akita puppies need to be trained from the early puppyhood. With the proper training, the dog is very good with children, playful, intelligent and energetic.

Bloodhound is one of oldest hound breeds. The dogs were trained to hunt together following the scent. Bloodhound has the most powerful sense of smell. Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog in the world! It was named most likely after the state of Chihuahua in Mexico. Some folks say that Mexican kings used to have Chihuahuas as hot-water bottles. Chihuahua owners call their pets “naughty little mexicans”. Typical colors range from solid black to solid white, spotted, black and a variety of other colors and patterns. The most sought for color is a very rare Blue Chihuahua.

Despite the tiny size these small dogs share the same spirit with their much bigger congeners. Usually graceful, devoted, lively, brave and very healthy, with big babyish eyes, Chihuahua are guarding their territory. They are easily provoked to attack, they can be jealous because of their focus on their master. It is not recommended to take Chihuahua puppies in families with small children because of their temperament.

Chihuahua is certainly a “star” dog. Many celebrities, for instance, Madonna, Mickey Rourke, Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears own a dog of this breed. In 2008 Walt Disney Pictures made all Chihuahua lovers happy by releasing a comedy called Beverly Hills Chihuahua.

The breed has long and notable history. It originates from Ancient Greece. The name most likely comes from the French “begueule” (meaning “open throat”). They appeared some films (Underdog, Cats and Dogs and Shiloh) in starring roles.
