Bloodhound
The eye of the yeoman and peasant sought in vain the tall form of old Sir Henry Lee of Ditchley, as, wrapped in his laced cloak, and with beard and whiskers duly composed, he moved slowly through the aisles, followed be the faithful mastiff, or bloodhound, which in old time had saved his master by his fidelity, and which regularly followed him to church. Bevis indeed, fell under the proverb which avers, ‘He is a good dog, which goes to church’; for, bating an occasional temptation to warble along with the accord, he behaved himself as decorously as any of the congregation, and returned much edified, perhaps, as most of them. The Bloodhound poster is one of artworks by Thomas Ivester Llyod. Images of different hunting scenes are his favorite subject.
Bloodhound is one of oldest hound breeds. The dogs were trained to hunt together following the scent. Bloodhound has the most powerful sense of smell. Other parts of its body help the keen nose – like long pendent ears which gather scents. The concentration is superb as bloodhound on trace gets blind because the skin around the eyes falls forward. The breed is notable for the great ability to follow scents which are up to 70 hours old. Thus bloodhounds are widely used in police and law enforcement.
It is generally accepted that the breed is a direct descendant of the Chien St. Hubert. Its origin is likely in Belgium. The name of the breed means “hound of pure blood” – a hound of noble lineage (not “blood seeking hound”).
Gentle and plush on the outside, Bloodhound has a strong character. It’s a proud and independent dog. Getting a puppy, pay attention that Bloodhound puppies are not to be trained, but educated.
The dogs of the breed often suffer a bloat, the leading cause of death of bloodhounds. Choosing Bloodhounds remember that only experienced breeder could give you correct recommendations on dog feeding.
McGruff the crime dog is the most famous Bloodhound hero. This cartoon was created for the National Crime Prevention Council to build crime awareness among children.
